    This poignant and touching love story is not your ordinary romance. It is a forbidden tale about Star-crossed lovers and their epic love for each other. It starts at the beginning when a 16 yr. old Lake Kaplan first meets mysterious and rugged, Manning Sutter. Lake has always done what she is told and still idolizes her father. He wants great things for her, so she is totally focused on achieving those goals. Lakes older sister, Tiffany, is rebellious, wild and carefree. She sees Lake talking to Manning and decides that he will be her next conquest. Manning is a flawed and broken hero who works hard and wants to be better. Something about Lake calls to him and he is torn by his need to protect her and stirrings of feelings he doesn't want to acknowledge. Lake has never thought about love and lust, like her sister, but Manning causes sensations to surface that she doesn't quite know how do handle. She does know that they have a special connection and they grow to genuinely care for each other. But there are those that would not understand their friendship and it is dangerous for both of them. I really cared for all the characters, even tho they would frustrate me at times, they were well developed and honest. The story line was so engaging I couldn't put it down. This is a moving and emotional story of love, redemption, trust, sacrifice, and consequences. It brought out so many extreme emotions and I loved every minute of it! I did not see the twist this would take and it left me stunned! I can't wait for the next book!

  • Beautiful Forbidden Love Story

    WOW. This was the first book by Jessica Hawkins I have ever read, and it was amazing. The story start out in 1993 were we meet Lake, she is a 16 year old high school student on summer break. After being left behind at school by her sister, she decides to walk home and were she meets Manning Manning is a 23 year old college student who is work on the construction in the house across the street. Tiffany, Lakes 19 year old annoying sister walks up to Manning and Lake and claims him as her boyfriend. This story is about a forbidden friendship and love. The story is told from both Lake and Manning perspective. This story is so genuine and realistic, that you can relate to the characters. There is nothing in the story that is rushed, which is why I think it is so perfect. While reading this story my heart broke for Lake each time Tiffany and Manning were together, you could already feel her falling in love slowly. I liked the fact that some parts were told from Manning's perspective as it gave an inside in to what he was thinking. I have not read a book that has kept me on the edge of my seat in so long, I could never predict what was going to happen next. I recommend this book to anyone look for a true love story that will make you fall in love with the main characters.

    What an extraordinary beginning to this epic three-book saga about forbidden love. Jessica Hawkins has managed to take her readers back to the 1990's in this emotionally captivating story and reintroduce us to things like Pearl Jam and Pink Floyd. I literally felt as if I was transported back in time and was experiencing all the things Lake and Manning had. I just finished this book super early this morning (around 4:30am if we're being accurate) when I should've been sleeping after a LONG day of work. But I WANTED to, no I NEEDED to finish this story before my mind would allow me to go to sleep. After reading the first book, Something in the Way --- which ended in a Cliffhanger of course --- all I can say is that Jessica Hawkins has successfully left me in a trance and gave me the most epic book hanger ever. If I could have given this story a THOUSAND STARS, I would have without a doubt. I just have one question - IS IT MAY YET? I know, I know that it's only three months away but I NEED the second book like yesterday! Can't we just fast-forward the clock three months ahead? PLEASE! If you haven't been fortunate enough to have read a story from the extraordinary and talented Jessica Hawkins yet, Something in the Way, would be the perfect introduction to her amazing writing style and character development.
